Playing Joy was a very interesting experience. For one thing, it gave me a chance to revisit my goth days of my high school years. Joy is a fascinating character. On the surface, she has a tough exterior with a screw-the-world mentality. Underneath that, however, she is filled with so much pain. She was bullied and put into a mental institution against her will, leading her to commit suicide. She hates to feel weak so she puts on this tough exterior. Joy was never seen or appreciated while she was alive. No one seemed to really listen to her. So when Joy meets Ellie, things start to change. Finally there is someone who can see her and listens to her. While Joy takes this a little too far and begins to manipulate Ellie, for once, there is someone who might understand what she went through. Joy finally starts bonding with someone. Joy is such a nuanced character and I had a wonderful time bringing her to life.
