Ellie Harding:
Appearance: Caucasian, female, brown hair, blue eyes, 5’ 8”, slim build, her clothing varies but her color palette is most neutral with pops of color.
Ellie is a recent college grad that just landed her first job and moved into her first apartment in Philly. As a kid, she had imaginary friends but as she brought them into adulthood, her mother started to worry. She’s been going to regular counseling sessions since middle school but her visions of imaginary friends haven’t gone away. They’ve tried hypnosis and drugs but nothing has changed. Now, Ellie lies to her therapist to get out of treatment because she “knows” nothing will work. Ellie is an optimist who would like to believe she is independent even though her imaginary friends help her with most things. She uses them for guidance. Ellie is strong willed and is sometimes too quick to judge a situation but very naive. She has no romantic figure in her life although she has flirtatious conversations with her best friend Andy. She has a love/hate relationship with her therapist, Paul who has been seeing her since middle school. Ellie has a love of writing and reading, which led to her degree in English. She also loves cooking, Pinterest, and wandering around the city. She hates the History Channel, microwavable dinners, and bad celebrity impressions. She fears bugs of all shapes and sizes, moving back home. She wants to maintain a good job, get a cat, and maybe a boyfriend.
Jackie Johnson:
Appearance: African American, female, black natural hair, striking brown eyes, 5’11”, slim build.
Jackie is a vivacious 40 something who passed away back in the 80s. Before she died, she was working as a kindergarten teacher but always dreamed of becoming a college professor. She had a serious boyfriend and a best friend relationship with her mother and father. Since she’s known Ellie, she’s become a second mom to her. Jackie has helped Ellie grow and flourish and make decisions along the way. She has a strong connection to God but respects that Ellie and the other ghosts don’t and she is an optimist like Ellie. Jackie loves Ellie, being invisible when she wants to be, and Cherry Garcia Ben & Jerry’s (which she enjoyed before she passed.) She hates the way the world’s going, what her sister has done with her hair, her old boyfriend’s wife, and diet fads of the 2000s. She fears Ellie finding out she’s a ghost and crossing over to the side past being a ghost. She wants to be human again but will settle for the life she has now.
Cole:
Appearance: Caucasian, male, short black hair, brown eyes, 5’ 8”.
Cole is a man in his late 20's who passed away in the 90's. Before he died, Cole had just been fired from his job at a telemarketing service (could you blame him for being a pessimist?) Cole’s parents were very separated from his life and that’s why he has trouble being a supportive parental figure for Ellie. He loves food, wine, and laughing at his own jokes. He hates Anne Hathaway, comments about his weight, and the way Jackie dresses people messing with Ellie. He fears coming back to life, facing his parents in the afterlife, and squirrels. He wants to be a professional wino.
Amanda Martin:
Appearance: Caucasian, female, light brown hair, brown eyes, short.
Amanda was 17 years old when she passed away, her family moved out of Ellie’s house right before Ellie and her mom moved in. Amanda was very close with her mother, father, and younger brother. She had just started her junior year in a new school and was struggling to keep up with the pace in the class. She gets frustrated quickly and makes snap judgments and comments about anyone and everyone she encounters. Like most kids her age, she has absolutely no filter. She believed in God until she passed away. She loves late night full house reruns, and causing trouble. She hates being told what to do. She fears other ghosts and cars. She wants to go back to school and get good grades.
Joy Bartwell:
Appearance: Caucasian, female, black hair, brown eyes, 5’ 7”, slim, wears dark eye makeup and dark lipstick, wears black clothing, going for the 90's grunge look.
Joy was 18 when she died and in her first year of college. She committed suicide after being bullied by Clarissa Carlton and her therapist Dr. Schneider. She came from an affluent background but rejected the image her parents wanted for her. She was raised mainly by a nanny, Helen, who now works as a receptionist. She is obsessed with getting revenge on her old therapist Dr. Schneider who made her parents think she was crazy. Joy loves the color black and Fall Out Boy. She hates Panic! At The Disco’s new stuff and Lisa Frank. She fears small children. She wants to not be dead.
Ellie’s Mom (Carol Harding):
Appearance: Caucasian, female, late 50's, dirty blonde hair, 5’ 6”, medium build
Ellie’s Mom is a kind woman who lives for her daughter’s happiness. Divorced when Ellie was a baby, Carol never remarried and rarely dated until now. After Ellie finally moved out, Carol is on the lookout for an eligible bachelor. Carol regularly plays tennis and hosts a book club (where Ellie got her love for reading). She manages a diner but is looking to retire. She worries about Ellie’s mental health and believes it’s her fault somehow that Ellie sees things.
Dr. Paul Schnieder:
Appearance: Caucasian, male, mid-60's, white hair, balding slightly, dresses in slacks and a button up shirt, his glasses are too small for his face.
Paul is Ellie’s therapist whom she has been seeing since middle school. He’s tried various treatments with Ellie including hypnotism and medication with no result. He’s now skeptical that she says the visions have gone away and will monitor her closely. He’s a Yale man and has worked in Philadelphia for a long time. He is married with three grown children and has one grandchild. He is somewhat cold but he believes that’s how therapists should be – shouldn’t be too inviting but just inviting enough to their patients. Paul wants to be more renowned for his work but can’t find something groundbreaking to undertake.
Clarissa Carlton:
Clarissa Carlton is a 23 year old girl who is a typical mean girl. In high school she bullies Joy and made it her mission to bully her in school and online. Clarissa lived in Philly all her life with her dad and brother.
Appearance: Caucasian, female, brown hair, blue eyes, 5’ 8”, slim build, her clothing varies but her color palette is most neutral with pops of color.
